Capt. Dane Skagen

Captain Dane Skagen holds a USCG 50 ton inland license with sail and towing endorsements.

I learned to sail in my teens on the lakes and rivers in Alberta and British Columbia. Having gained experience running rivers on 40 foot water jet boats, I subsequently obtained a summer job operating a 36 foot jet boat on Hudson Bay in Nunavut (Northwest Territories) for a company searching for a sunken sailing ship .

After retiring as an infantry officer from the US Marine Corps and moving to Maryland I once again took up the sailing life. In the last eight years I sailed the Chesapeake Bay on multiple boats and voyaged more extensively along the US East Coast and Bahamas with my wife on our Saga 43, Fortunate Soul.

Recent 2015-2018 deliveries have included sixteen deliveries to and from the Eastern Caribbean on various monohulls, sailing, and power cats ranging in size from 37 to 56 ft, eight deliveries on the Atlantic seaboard ranging from New England to Florida, delivery of a Valiant 40 from Panama to Florida, delivery of a Hallberg Rassy 46 from Deale, MD to Chicago, an Island Packet 440 from Maryland to Schenectady, NY, and a Tom Cat 30 from Annapolis to Lake Champlain.

My strengths as a captain are my calm demeanor and ability to handle difficult situations, my physical fitness to handle demanding foredeck tasks, and my expertise in piloting many types of sail and power vessels. With my prior career in cybersecurity education and training, I am especially adept in owner-assisted deliveries where owners desire additional training in maneuvering under power and expanding their offshore voyaging skills.

As a co-owner of US Delivery Captain, Inc. I am responsible for marketing, personnel and administrative functions and I coordinate deliveries for not only myself and my co-captain-wife, but for our network of contract captains as well.
