Sailing Biography: Capt. Gordon Bennett
I began sailing at the age of nine and was the third generation of my family to enroll in junior sailing lessons at Seneca Yacht Club in upstate New York. From day one I was hooked. When I became too old to take lessons I assumed the role of instructor and my sailing instructing career began. After graduating from Hobart College in Geneva, NY with a degree in geology, I worked for three seasons in the Adirondack Mountains as the sailing director at Camp Chateaugay. In 1999 I decided to pursue sailing as a professional career and earned a Masters in outdoor education from SUNY Cortland. As part of my course work I took a one month long Sailing Educators course with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in the Sea of Cortez. This was my first experience with ocean sailing and I knew that I had made the right career choice. Upon returning I took a sailing job with the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School in Baltimore, MD. This is where I fell in love with the Chesapeake Bay and my wife Lianna. She was my Boss then - and still is! We eventually purchased and moved onto a 28 ft Newport sloop and spent five months exploring the east coast of the U.S. After two and a half years of living onboard, we sold the Newport and moved ashore for the birth of our first child, Gordon the 4th! During this time I earned my U.S.C.G. 50 ton Masters License with sailing and towing endorsements. I also became an ASA instructor and a High School teacher with a certification in outdoor education with a rating of highly effective. |
