Sailing Biography: Capt. Gordon Bennett

I began sailing at the age of nine and was the third generation of my family to enroll in junior sailing lessons at Seneca Yacht Club in upstate New York.  From day one I was hooked.  When I became too old to take lessons I assumed the role of instructor and my sailing instructing career began.  After graduating from Hobart College in Geneva, NY with a degree in geology, I worked for three seasons in the Adirondack Mountains as the sailing director at Camp Chateaugay.  In 1999 I decided to pursue sailing as a professional career and earned a Masters in outdoor education from SUNY Cortland.  As part of my course work I took a one month long Sailing Educators course with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in the Sea of Cortez.  This was my first experience with ocean sailing and I knew that I had made the right career choice.

Upon returning I took a sailing job with the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School in Baltimore, MD.  This is where I fell in love with the Chesapeake Bay and my wife Lianna. She was my Boss then - and still is!  We eventually purchased and moved onto a 28 ft Newport sloop and spent five months exploring the east coast of the U.S. After two and a half years of living onboard, we sold the Newport and moved ashore for the birth of our first child, Gordon the 4th!  During this time I earned my U.S.C.G. 50 ton Masters License with sailing and towing endorsements.  I also became an ASA instructor and a High School teacher with a certification in outdoor education with a rating of highly effective.

For the last nine years I have been teaching ASA classes and delivering yachts.  My delivery experience includes sailing yachts from 30 - 60 feet and includes deliveries to popular destinations such as Charleston, Nantucket, Ft. Lauderdale, Key West, the Bahamas, and Bermuda.  When not sailing I enjoy spending time at home with my family and busily preparing for the birth of our second son.  I will let you know his name when he gets here!  I have logged thousands of miles in boats as basic as open-hulled lifeboats to high end luxury yachts.  No matter where your boat falls in the spectrum, you can be sure that she will be treated as if she were my own.

I share your passion for sailing and understand that it should be an enjoyable experience, which is why I place the safety of the crew and boat before schedules.  A schedule is important, but is not worth pushing the crew or the boat beyond sensible limits. I am a non-smoker and do not allow any smoking below or above decks at any time on deliveries.  When it comes to instruction I firmly believe there is no better way than learning by doing.

My passion is sailing and my profession is teaching, a combination that ensures a safe delivery for your yacht and an excellent learning opportunity for you and your crew.
